Glove, covering for the hand. In modern usage a glove has
a separate sheath for each finger; a mitten has a separate division only
for the thumb. The wearing of gloves is generally believed to date from
prehistoric times. The earliest examples come from a royal Egyptian tomb
of about 1350BC. Gloves are mentioned by such ancient Greek authors as
Homer and Xenophon. The Greeks and Romans, living in comparatively mild
climates, used gloves chiefly to protect the hands during heavy work. By
the 8th and 9th centuries AD, gloves were in general use in the British
Isles, Germany, and Scandinavia.

In the Middle Ages (5th century to 15th century), richly jeweled and
embroidered gloves were commonly worn by monarchs, noblemen, and high
ecclesiastical officials; such gloves were also made a part of the papal
vestments. Armored gloves, or gauntlets, were worn in hunting and in
battle. Ornamental elbow-length gloves became fashionable for ladies in
the 13th century. Gloves also acquired symbolic importance. A folded
glove was commonly presented as a token of intent to carry out a
contract in good faith. A glove was thrown down as a challenge to battle
and picked up to indicate acceptance of the challenge. A lady's glove
was often given as a love token.
During the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, fashionable men and women
wore gloves of silk, velvet, and kid, often richly embroidered and
scented with perfume. Later, gloves were also made of other woven or
knitted fabric and of heavier leather. Once obligatory for formal
occasions, gloves are less frequently worn for such occasions today.
Various specialized types of gloves are used in modern scientific and
industrial establishments. These include the fine-textured rubber gloves
used by surgeons and nurses to preserve antiseptic conditions during
operations, and the heavy rubber gloves worn by electrical workers, the
leaded rubber gloves worn by X-ray technicians, and the asbestos-covered
gloves worn by workers in steel mills, all for insulation.
